Steal This Look: A Clean, Well-Lighted Study by Designer C.S. Valentin
Not only is A Colonial House in Bellport with Uncommon Style from French Designer C. S. Valentin one of our favorite house tours ever on Remodelista, but it also features one of my favorite room images ever. The picture showcases the cozy study on the second floor of his client’s classic New England house. With its soft light, quiet hues, and white walls (unadorned save a framed drawing by a child), the room is a palette cleanser, a refined and serene home office perfect for work, study—and the occasional nap.
Here’s how to steal the look.
Above: The photo, styled by Alexa Hotz and shot by Jonathan Hökklo for Remodelista, is one of our most-liked Instagram images ever.
Furniture
Above: Valentin has several of Thonet’s Maple Bentwood Chairs, reupholstered in white suede, scattered throughout the home. Find original vintage versions via the likes of 1stdibs and Chairish—like this one, available for $1,524—and have them upholstered yourself. Or, for something similar, consider the Pierce and Ward Bentwood Chair from West Elm, available with cream-colored velvet upholstery; $799.
Above: Valentin’s design aesthetic has been called “mid-century Shaker.” Case in point: this rustic but Modernist Pine Table by Charlotte Perriand from the 1960s; $4,673 at Pamono.
Above: CB2’s Lubi Sleeper Daybed, in natural, can be found secondhand online; another option is the similarly named Softline Lubi Sofa Bed; €1,110 from Connox.
Lighting
Above: On the desk: The Atollo Table Lamp, by Vico Magistretti for Oluce, has a domed Murano glass diffuser. DWR sells it in two sizes (small and medium); from $1,435.
Above: Hive stocks the Verner Panton VP1 Flowerpot Suspension Lamp in a slew of colors, including white and matte white; $510.
Textiles
Above: For a similar-in-spirit rug, try the Annie Selke Ticking Stripe Handwoven Indoor/Outdoor Rug; currently on sale for $223 for the 6×9′ size.
Above: This throw blanket was designed for Hotel Esencia by Bogus Studio, a furniture and textile brand created by Valentin in collaboration with Alexander Diaz-Andersson. For similar options, see 9 Favorites: Winter Blankets and Throws in Jazzy Geometric Patterns.
