In Praise of Wicker: 7 Handmade Baskets to Swoon Over

Have you heard? Basketry is hot.
It’s due to a new film, Wicker, in which a lonely fisherwoman (Olivia Coleman) commissions a local basketmaker to weave her a husband. Let’s just say her affair with her wicker suitor (played by Alexander Skarsgård) is bringing new, unexpectedly steamy attention to an old art.
We get it. There are woven objects we’ve pined after over the years, each one of a kind, handmade by artisans who carry on a long tradition of making. Here’s our current shortlist of unusual standouts.
Above: Each Moroccan Basket is “handwoven in Marrakech from rapidly renewable materials”; from $69 at Elsie Green.
Above: The shapely Bordeaux Basket “can be used to carry the grapes in from the vineyard or deliver the wine once bottled”; $65 from Olive Ateliers.
Above: From basketmakers Underwater Weaving, the Long Stem Pack Basket is “inspired by an Adirondack backpack—one you might find in a traditional fishing shack”; $368.
Above: Another from Olive Ateliers: The Fresh-Cut Flower Basket, $145.
Above: Named for its shape, the Tonga Garlic Basket is woven from “ilala palm outside the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe”; no two are the same. From $88 at Bloomist.
Above: Hand-woven in Bolga, Ghana, the Veta Vera Washing Basket is made from undyed veta vera grass and “intended to be used for hanging washing on the line.” It’s $150 exclusively from Toast.
Above: Last but not least, a couple of our editors have a Taylor Basket, handwoven from the totora reed that grows near Lake Titicaca. We particularly love the surprising scale of the large and giant sizes. From $190 at Intiearth.
